Your dog’s eyes tell you everything

The canine eye is like the human eye, every part is subject to problems that can affect the ability to see. The most common eye problems cause discharge, redness and pain. Signs of pain are tears, squinting and holding the eye(s) closed. For dogs, conjunctivitis is probably the most common cause of eye discharge and redness. That can be caused by allergies, environmental irritants, as well as bacterial or viral infections. Sometimes the inflammation leads to a blockage of the tear ducts in the corner of the eye, causing the tears to flow over the lower lid and onto the face. In most cases it can be treated with drops or ointments easily obtained from your vet.

Cataracts are common in dogs too and make the centre of the eye look white. Cataracts may be present at birth or develop with age. They are often caused by diabetes, which requires a specially prepared diet and lots of attention.
